In the bustling streets of Manehattan, it wasn't often that a crime went unseen by guard or vigilante. However that was not to say it was a utopia by any means. The security of the city worked to stop any number of malignant entities, but the corruption within their own ranks - spurred on by frantic recruitment in the face of growing crime - often went unpunished.

"Let me go!" The cry pierced the bustle of the crowds, but not a single passer-by stopped to help once they saw the figures in the alleyway.

Two stallions, clad in guard armor, one a pegasus and one an earth pony, stood over a small, huddled figure. She sat with her back to the wall, squeezing a glowing object tight between her forehooves, shaking hard from the injuries she'd already taken. "Give up the ball and we'll let you go." the pegasus growled, raising a hoof threateningly. She just whimpered, shaking her head, and the pegasus lashed out, sending her sprawling across the ground with yet another choked cry that echoed down the alley and into the street.

He was walking through, on his way back from the market when the sound of a scream carried to him. It didn't really matter the context, he simply didn't like the feel of this and his gut hadn't been wrong yet when deciding his actions. In one fluid movement, he dropped his bag of foodstuffs onto the road, broke into a dash, and weaved his way effortlessly through the ponies who moved along the street, his smaller frame and agility giving him an edge over finding passage through crowds.

"Hey! You!"

When he'd reached the scene, it was in time to see a mare lying on the floor and two stallions in an alleyway over her, striking her down - and that was enough really. Having never lost his momentum from his sprint, he jumped and spun, rearing his back hoof in a wide arc to hit the pegasus square in the jaw as he turned to react to the shout. Immediately upon landing, he side-stepped to be between the mare and the earth stallion, taking up a defensive stance.

"You okay...?" the teen colt asked, not looking back at her, but keeping his eyes steady on the next target.

The remaining pony stepped back in shock, his eyes suddenly wide as dinner plates. The officer couldn't have been older than nineteen - barely old enough to wear the uniform, but there he was. He looked to his friend - currently bleeding and unconscious, from the combination of the powerful kick, and the strike to the head that resulted as he fell - and then back to the new arrival, before picking up the pegasus by the scruff of his uniform and dragging him towards the street, fearful eyes upon the attacker at all times.

Viola sniffled, starting to pick herself up. Clad in lace and a crimson cloak, most of the inflicted injuries were hidden, though her legs were slightly grazed and a large welt was starting to come up on her cheek, easily seen beneath the tear-stained fur. "F-fine. Your assistance is appreciated." For the first time, she set down the orb that they were looking for - a swirling sphere of magic, coated in a semi-transparent blue glow, containing layers upon layers of strange curving patterns that suggested far more depth than its size would suggest.

"It was not unknown that this would occur, but you are an oddity. I can...I can make my way home from here." Her voice cracked as she spoke, and despite what she was saying it was obvious she wasn't in any shape to protect herself; holding her right front hoof slightly off of the ground, with lace garments and aubergine cloak dusty and askew, and her white mane and tail a mess of tangles and dirt.

His face finally softened and he relaxed all his muscles at once with a deep sigh as the other stallion left. He stood there for a moment to smirk as the attacks retreated, caught up for a second in the moment. Typical. Cause trouble and leave at the sight of it.

"Don't mention it," he responded casually, turning to assess the scene now. "All I heard was a scream and I figured someone could use some help."

He thought to ask about the orb but now seemed unwise a time. Instead, he shook his head and moved to offer her a hoof of support, cocking his head only a minute to glance at the food he'd dropped before as it was trampled in the crowd. Ah, well, he guessed. Gimmicks would make a big deal of it, but he'd just have to get more food later. His roommates would understand.

"I live just down the street from here with some friends. Why don't you let me see about that leg then I can walk you home? It's safe there, I assure you." He smiled at her as warmly as capable, hoping she'd take the offer instead so he wouldn't have to worry about her safety... and to ask about that orb.

Viola looked down at herself, then back up, trying to still her shivers. "Okay." was all she replied, in a quiet voice. Taking a moment, she readjusted her clothing, setting the cloak straight and straightening the spider-webbing lace that covered her legs, albeit with a few threads snapped in the altercation, and retrieved one of her plain black shoes that had gotten lost slightly up the alley.

Walking back to her saviour with a slight limp, Viola turned her gaze upon the orb. With a thought, it lifted off of the ground, floating in place before zipping around to hover at her side, despite the fact that she didn't actually have a horn. "I can walk on my own. Lead the way?"

He watched her carefully, raising an eyebrow at the action. She most definitely didn't have a horn, and one didn't have a skill known as "detective work" without catching that. Then again, he was an earth pony with pegasus powers. He filed this away as another question. Best to get the mare off the street first before delving into investigations.

He lead her, nodding his head, back out into the crowd and down the street. They were only half a block away from the townhouse, blocked off from view by a tall blue-grey brick wall overhung with vines. The building was tall, at least five floors, and made of painted wood paneling in a soft salmon that threatened the sanctity of the silvers and blues making up the rest of the street. Skylark worked on the gate, locked with a simple mechanism combination keypad.

"I'm Skylark, by the way," he said, having spent most of their walk on watch for more trouble. He finally had the iron gate opened and held it to Viola pass first. "Hopefully Lamplight's home; she's better at this first-aid stuff than me. But barring that, I can fix you up fine. She's one of my housemates."

Viola stepped through the gate, the orb floating out to twirl around her once she was within the wall. She glanced about, however her gaze ultimately fell to the magical sphere, which gently came to rest ahead of her.

Finally, she tore her eyes away, shaking her head. "I'm...sorry, that you needed to..." She closed her eyes and grimaced, trying to unmuddle her thoughts. "...intervene. It cannot be convenient for you to...need to help me." She rubbed her head. "Sorry."

"Heh..." Skylark came through the gate as well, making sure it was closed behind him before leading Viola up the short path to the stoop to unlock the front door. "Trust me, you aren't inconveniencing anyone. If anything, you've given me something to do today besides watch people argue over dinner."

He guided her inside, hanging an immediate left into a small den beyond two glass doors, beckoning the couch against the room's front window, then trotted down the center hallway to look for his teammates.

"Anyone home?" he called out. Response: silence. Where did everyone go..? Skylark quickly trotted up the stairs and around the walkway to the third floor, then the fourth. Finally, he stopped at a door where hung a glowing purple rune. Leaning his hear to the wood, he could hear movement inside. He rapped on the door gently.

"Light, you there? Sorry to bother but I've got an injured mare downstairs, and I can't find anyone else."

The door opened with a wave of magic and Lamplight stood there, shrouded in the darkness of a candlelit stairway that lead to the attic. She stared blankly at Skylark, eying him up and down. Odd. This didn't look like a pony who was supposed to have brought home dinner ingredients.

"..." She stepped outside the room in haste, extinguishing each candle in turn and closing the door after her before Sky could get a good look inside. The request was simple enough. She sighed in a grand fashion and made her way downstairs without a word, coming up on Viola abruptly as she entered the den on Sky's guidance.

Lamplight had strangely lit eyes that scanned the room rapidly as she entered, landing on Viola only after assuring herself of the safety of the environment. Sky had caught her up on the walk down the stairs, then she'd sent him off to find a first aid kit.

"... hurt?"

Viola lifted her leg a little further, indicating it to Lamplight, the joint already slightly swollen. "Only here. I shall not trouble you with such fleeting things as scrapes and bruises." Her gaze was not upon Lamplight, instead drifting across the room, curiously studying what was there to see - and wondering about what might be hidden in the attic above. With a telekinetic tug, she removed her hood, letting the curls of her mane sit freely, marred only by the dust and grime of her assault, and a trail of fresh-dried blood down the right side of her face, something she had either neglected to mention, or neglected to notice. "I am sorry. I appear to have cost you a basket of food when your friend assisted me."
