Black Runner looked in a mirror in her low end apartment located in Downtown Manehattan. It wasn't exactly the best place for her to live, but it was certainly enough for the work that she had gotten into. The apartment consisted of a bedroom, a bathroom, and a living room that acted as her personal office which had been filled to the brim with files that were organized in a way that would seem random to anyone else besides herself. She knew that it didn't really matter how many locks she placed on her door, if a pony wanted to get in, they probably could. So, instead of worrying about whether or not her files would get stolen, she instead decided that it would be best to make them damn near impossible to read to anyone besides her. One code for organization purposes, another code for the order of each page in every folder, and a third set of code to actually make anything out of what she wrote down. It was probably excessive, but those folders were her strength, they were her bargaining chips, her means of survival, and the only thing keeping her relevant in this world. Black ran a hoof through her crew cut mane with a sigh. She was going out that night and he had to make herself presentable somehow. She looked down at the folder the Shrouded Blade had given her a week prior detailing some information about someone who owed quite a large sum of debt, a master thief called Ruby Nights. Since that day, Black had spent a fair amount of time shadowing the other pony, trying her best to figure out a few patterns of her day to day life so that she could find an ideal time to strike up a conversation and get some information out of her. Black closed the folder and placed it on a counter as she walked out of the bathroom and back into her bedroom to grab and purple scarf and a matching beret. Placing both of those objects in their respective places on her body, Black decided that now would be a pretty good time to get moving towards her destination. She walked down the streets of Manehattan looking for a bar that she had seen Ruby frequent over the last few days around this time. She walked in and looked around for a brown mane and coat and was thoroughly disappointed when she didn't manage to see her target. She sighed and moved herself over to the bar and sat down in the middle of a set of three empty stools. Black then raised her hoof to signal the bartender over and hopefully get something in her that would calm her nerves a bit. The stallion approached and asked her what she would be drinking, "Vodka tonic," she said with a sheepish grin as she watched her walk away. With that, Black took a moment to look around the room and think about what she was going to say if Ruby showed up. Nothing too suspicious, it has to be casual, but not too casual you aren't friends or anything hell we aren't even acquaintances. How would a stallion do it if they approached her? Offer to buy her a drink? Maybe hit her with a pick up line? No... no no no no no there's absolutely no way I can do that, I'm a professional trying to get some information, not some horny bronco looking for a good time. Maybe it would work best if I just said hello, she thought as the bartender came back with her drink. She absentmindedly reached her hooves out to take a sip as her grip slipped and the glass fell to the floor and shattered. She let out a gasp as her usually grey face turned a light pink, "Oh jeez," she said as she looked between the bartender and the broken glass, "I'm so sorry," the bartender shrugged it off like he had seen it happen a million times, though probably not as often when it was someone as sober as Black was. She was so embarrassed, "Maybe tonight just isn't my night," she said with a sigh as she covered her face with her hooves in frustration. Nice job, idiot, she thought, At this rate you're probably gonna get yourself kicked out of the place before the target even shows up. Edited by Wavelength, Sun Oct 6, 2013 9:11 pm.

Was this what it felt like to be crazy? Ruby could hardly tell the difference. She was far too accustomed to seeing insanity back home… So much that it made her feel crazy half the time. She only knew one thing. For a while now… and any time she was out in the city all by herself… there was always somepony following her. The Blackout Inn… This was the pub Ruby usually found herself crawling into after a long night’s work… but there was no way in Tartarus she would repeat that tonight. Anxious… disturbed… but quiet as a mouse, she crawled through an alleyway leading up to the bar. This late and she’d yet to catch one glimpse of her stalker… Ruby didn’t know whether this was a good thing or a bad thing. She crept onward to the front of the building, poking her head gently up to one of the windows. Different scarf, different beret… Same pony… Ruby thought to herself, peering through the window. The mare tended to change up her clothing every encounter but Ruby could recognize the pelt and mane. She could have fled right at that moment… but that would never stop this mare from following her some other night. She didn’t even know who this mare was affiliated with. Was the incident with the captain a coincidence or the direct cause? Well… She’d only find out one way, she figured… Heads flocked to the sound of a chiming bell. In little time, a hooded mare entered the pub, paying no attention at all to whatever glances might have been offered her way. Her eye caught the glimpse of a shattered glass on the floor and there she was. The pegasus mare uttered a word. She appeared not to have noticed her quite yet. Ruby made her way up to her, regardless. “I don’t know—it might not be…” Ruby spoke in a mildly threatening tone to the mare. She had no weapon drawn yet… none besides the very aggravated and fed-up scowl she wore. Edited by Ruby Nights, Thu Dec 12, 2013 3:31 am.

Kite turned around when she heard a rather irritated sounding voice that was obviously directed at her. She turned around and was face to face with the pony that she had come here to see in the first place, though she certainly wasn't expecting to see her like this. The whole night was planned around a casual greeting and a few drinks leading into questions and answers. She looked up to Ruby and grinned nervously. She was thinking about leaving, about going back to the Shrouded Blades and telling them that her cover was blown and there was no way to get what they wanted. She was about to back away and walk out the bar when she realized that there was no way this pony was going to let that happen. She wouldn't have shown up tonight if she wasn't expecting a confrontation, especially since it seemed like she knew about Kite. "I'm so sorry," she said her voice barely audible over the ambient noise of the bar trickling through their ears, "You've seen me before, I can tell, but I'm not here to hurt you. I'll admit my intentions for coming here tonight aren't exactly in your best interest, but I also didn't come here to stick a knife in your back. Please, just let me talk and I promise that we can come to an agreement that will be mutually beneficial." This pony hadn't even done anything but shoot her an angry look and speak with her in a malevolent way and Kite was already folding under the pressure. She was in full flight mode, but she knew that she wasn't about to actually go anywhere. The only option was to present her assailant with something that would benefit them and pray to the moon that she would take it. |

“You talk too much… Shut up and buy me a drink,” Ruby dismissively replied, only having half-listened to the words her stalker tried to say. She was much too tired to give her anything more really. Without another word, Ruby appointed herself to the seat right beside her, hopping onto it with little care nor effort. Not even looking Kite’s way yet, she slammed her hoof against the counter twice to catch the bartender’s attention. “A glass of red wine, please…? It’s on my friend~” Ruby ordered with a somewhat cruel snicker and grin. |

Kite blinked a few times, surprised that Ruby would be so casual about everything after what had just happened. She then turned around and hopped back up on the seat and waited until the bartender came by, "Another Vodka tonic for me," she said as she turned looked towards Ruby, "I was going to offer to buy you a drink anyways, no need to force it on me." She couldn't help but question her current situation. As much as Ruby seemed to be rolling with everything, she had a hard time thinking that there wasn't more to the other mare's attitude about everything. "So..." Kite said as she waited for their drinks to arrive, "Care to tell me why you're here? I'm surprised you would choose to confront me if you knew that I had been shadowing you." |

The bartender left to go fetch their drinks and Ruby crossed her legs to relax. Discreetly, her head shifted right… and then, left as she surveyed the ponies around her. Did this mare have some grunts hired up in case things slipped out of control for her? There was no way of telling but Ruby remained cautious. Even if she did, she still had her debt to The Shrouded Blade at least. If her hypothetical thugs somehow got her in trouble, surely this mare would have to answer to them. “Honestly… you don’t look very tough up close,” Ruby answered her, glancing over her stalker with a soft grin. “Besides… if I run away you’re just going to keep following me, aren’t you?” |

Kite chucked at the comment, "Yeah I'm not particularly intimidating, but I've never really been in a situation where I have to be physically intimidating in my line of work," she said as she bartender came by with their drinks. The pegasus picked up the glass and took a sip before setting it back down on the bar and turning towards Ruby. "And yes, I would have continued shadowing you until you either slipped up and showed me what I needed to know or I managed to get you in a situation like this one where we could talk about it," she said as she turned towards Ruby and returned the grin. "Though this confrontation certainly isn't going as I planned." |

“Life doesn’t really work that way, does it…?” Ruby nonchalantly mentioned, raising her glass to take a sip of her wine. She really could have been just waltzing into a trap there. And if she had been, she surely had no idea how she’d get out of it. “…But how boring would it be if it did?” Sometimes, a pony had to think with her gut. And tonight, Ruby’s gut was telling her to face this stalker and to shake from out of her all information she could. Hmm… So who have I pissed off as of late…? She pondered, trying to get some sort of a clue as to who the mare worked for. Her first guess… would definitely be the mob—the same one led by the crazy geomancer punk who wrecked Amour’s club. That stallion certainly made a lot of threats while running away with his boys like a scared little foal… She had no idea whether he had the guts to go through with them though… The only other reasonable explanation was… the Shrouded Blade? Sure, she got on their nerves some… but why? They already had her held by her neck with such a huge debt. “So… You probably already know my name, then… Any normal pony I’d just have met would have asked for it by now, don’cha think?” Ruby asked of her, trying to figure out what exactly this mare already knowing her name must have meant. Was the geomancer’s mob organized enough for her to already know this much? She wasn’t sure… but maybe that was just her underestimating their resources. "Hey," Kite said as she looked at Ruby with a glare, "I'm a perfectly normal pony. I just happen to have a," she paused as she stared at her glass, "Questionable occupation. Though you are right, I do know your name, and a lot more than that if I'm to be completely honest. I know your friends, past relationships, business deals, debts... the list goes on and on. I can show you your file if you're willing to pay the price for it," she said as she took a sip from her drink. "As for my identity," she said as she placed the glass back on the bar, "You can call me Kite, it's a pleasure to finally meet you Miss Ruby Nights." Edited by Wavelength, Mon Dec 23, 2013 12:25 am.

The Shrouded Blade… or Shaker Down’s Mob? Like the repeated words of some sort of trance, this question echoed in Ruby’s head. Shaker Down was an extra-large sized crybaby who just couldn’t accept being outdone by a mare… so his motive at least made sense to her. And yet still, she doubted his ability to be this organized. Meanwhile, The Shrouded Blade clearly possessed the more appropriate level of resources… it just didn’t make sense to her why they’d need to go to such great lengths. Her ears piqued as Kite offered her the chance to view her own file. That was it! “A pleasure to meet you, Kite~” Ruby began, firmly setting her glass down upon the counter. She gave a friendly-looking grin, the raised cheeks coming more from her confidence in beating this mare at her own game than any sincerity really. She extended her hoof toward the information broker. “So, about viewing my file… How much would it cost me just to view one tiny part of it?” Edited by Ruby Nights, Wed Dec 25, 2013 2:31 am.
