Applejack

"Um... tea is... fine, ma'am. Thankye." Applejack blushed and looked away too, but instead eyed Twilight. Something about this made the gal seem a little more opened up instead of wound like a rope in a pulley. She fiddled with her necklace, letting Twilight do the talking. She'd interrupt - maybe - if something happened.

Her tone became mean, an old crone of a sharpness to it. Rock-a-bye continued pouring tea for Applejack as she spoke, now cruelly. "Ha! Family? Little street urchins don't have family. You make a business - a nice little motel - and ponies think they can get through life with handouts. Comes by every now and then to rummage the trash bins like a raccoon and scare off potential customers by making them think I run some kind of hovel."

She finished with the tea, shifting back to offer Applejack that granny-smile. She rolled her eyes as she dropped back into the story.

"She came around a few hours after you girls finished checking in - didn't bring that ratty brother of hers this time. Asked if I had leftovers from dinner. I chased her off with my trusty 'sword' though." She made a point to pat the mop nearby affectionately.

"An orphan?" Twilight said, pausing for a moment. She… hadn't expected that at all. Focus, Twi, focus! One of the elements, your Element, is missing! "Erm, you've had trouble with this filly before?" Twilight pressed, becoming more curious. This was beginning to come together; she was small and clearly knew the hotel through one way or another, and had a good motive to take guest's things as well. There wasn't enough evidence yet, though… maybe if some of the other residents could corroborate?

"Um, Applejack," she said a little quietly. "Maybe you could… get to know a little more about the other guests? Maybe they heard the, er, ruckus as well? I want to know more about this… filly." She tried to convey her theories, winking and jerking her head somewhat awkwardly before blushing and feeling foolish. That could have gone better…

"...Suuuure." Applejack grinned a toothy grin and, heh, kinda, haha.... okay, she got up very quickly and trotted over to the... she looked between them with a frown and painful memories, then decided to avoid the family and go talk to the couple.

"Say, uh, did you guys.." Applejack took off her hat and bit her lip. "I mean, that was sure some kinda sleep last night, huh? BOY, I slept like... well... like a .... like a somethin' all right! How 'bout you, neighbors?"

There was that pathetic grin again...

Rock-a-bye watched Applejack leave with a confused look before turning her attention to Twilight's question. "She's got a way about her - a talent for illusion. She shows up every so often and is pretty hard to catch; stole some books from a little filly once who was staying with her family. Can you believe that? Stealing from a child!" The mare rocked her head back and looked down her snout at Twilight. "You sure are curious about the thing. Did something happen?"

Meanwhile, the couple just stared, exchanging a look. One of the stallions spoke up: "Uh... we slept... fine..." He smiled nervously at his partner. "We're, um, just on vacation. How did... you sleep... neighbor?"

The other stallion looked wide-eyed at the other, his back to Applejack, and he mouthed the word "crazy."

Books? That sounded familiar… In addition to the Element, she'd been missing the few books she'd brought along with her for this trip… That was certainly enough for her to at least try to find the little filly. "I'm just… curious," she said, trying her best to deflect the question. "This is my first time in Manehattan." So, there was a suspect… now if only she had a way to find her.

She was pushing it a little too much with Rock-a-bye, though… They would just have to figure out some other way to find her. "What does this filly look like?" she said, a final question before she could continue. She could go back to the room and search again, or ask around on the street… she didn't need to use magic to be useful.

Applejack continued to grin stupidly until the question, where she nodded furiously then: "Oh! I slept like a... like.... wait a tick... I already answered that!" Her liar-face broke and she sighed deeply, crumbling back into her usual self. "... Excuse me a moment."

She went back to Twilight's side in time to hear the final question, only giving Twilight an tired smile and sit beside her again. She wasn't good at this. "The other guests are very pleasant ponies. They slept wond'rfully..."

"Oh, just some raggedy little thing. Nothing to trouble yourself with. She looks like any one of those street urchins - ragged and unkempt. Mane all the way to here and trailing behind her," the old mare rolled her eyes, getting up and prepping a tray to start serving other guests. "Backpack has a little palm tree on it so I've taken to calling her Palm. Fits, seeing as she'll take anything not nailed down. Sticky hooves, that one."

A palm tree backpack? That should be enough… although, if she was an orphan, would the palm tree be her cutie mark? "Even so, that should be enough," she murmured, thinking aloud. Turning back to Rock-a-Bye, she smiled. "Thanks for your help." She finished her tea, nearly burning her tongue and trying to cover up the pain with a cough. "We should get packing, Applejack," she whispered to her friend, nodding. She excused herself, heading back to the room.

Twilight shut the door behind her, pausing for a moment to listen and see if anyone was paying attention to them. The moment she felt safe, she released the breath she hadn't been aware she was holding. "I think I found our thief," she said finally to Applejack. "We're looking for a little filly with a palm tree saddlebag. Apparently she likes taking books… Which fits with what we're missing."

Her horn lit up as she did her best to make sure everything was where it should be. "If we check where the window is, in that alley, we might find something we can use to track hr down." She felt stupid for not thinking of that before… where was your head, Twi? Did you lose it with the crown?

[12/11/13 10:28:25 PM] Krissiejack: Applejack paused in her tracks. "A filly? What would a filly be doing with your crown?" She went to the window and attempted to open it again to see out into the alleyway. After a few grunts and a stuck window, she turned around and bucked it hard, dislodging the latch entirely so that the window frame broke free of the wall and fell inward into the room. "Ain't nopony can say I don't still got it, ain't that right, legs?"

She lifted a leg and kissed it, then walked over the glass to the window and looked into the alley.
[12/11/13 10:30:01 PM] Fethur: Ignoring that the motel owner was probably not going to appreciate someone BREAKING HER WINDOW, Applejack manages to peer over the radiator and broken window into the alley. It's too dark to really see anything but if one jumped from here, they could make it to the alley rather flawlessly since it's on the first floor.
[12/11/13 10:30:40 PM] Krissiejack: ((YOUR WINDOW SUCKS))
[12/11/13 10:30:43 PM] WilloWisp: xD
[12/11/13 10:36:41 PM] WilloWisp: Twilight went over to look through the hole where there was once a window, peering around Applejack. After a few seconds, a blush came over her face and she quickly backed, giving her friend some space. "You can go first," she said, pulling her cloak tighter. There was no point in pushing AJ aside when she didn't even know what they were looking for yet…
[12/11/13 10:40:02 PM] Krissiejack: "Mind bringing a light, Twilight?" She tipped her hat and leapt without hesitation, landing with a satisfying click onto the alley floor, even in the darkness. She straightened up again and pushed her hat back into position. "I'm up a blind alley, literally." She blinked against the darkness.
[12/11/13 10:40:16 PM] Fethur: Skip my turn~
[12/11/13 10:40:25 PM] Fethur: I've nothing to add until you can see the alley XD
[12/11/13 10:42:50 PM] WilloWisp: "Oh, um, sure," Twilight said, her horn lighting up for a moment before she separated the soft glow and sent it down. Deep breaths. Any unicorn can use this spell. She followed the light down, glancing back to the window for a moment. She could fix it… But not now.
[12/11/13 10:45:32 PM] Krissiejack: Wanna skip before me, Fethur?
[12/11/13 10:45:39 PM] Krissiejack: Makes more sense for progression
[12/11/13 10:45:41 PM] Fethur: Sure
[12/11/13 10:48:32 PM] Fethur: The alley was squeezed between your building and the one next over, ending on one side with the brick and mortar of the building. The other end was fenced off with chain-link. The light showed that the floor was made of patchy dirt. In a small tuft of grass is one of Twilight's books, but not the one on Sin. The base of the fence is pulled up in a corner.
[12/11/13 10:52:25 PM] Krissiejack: Applejack grinned as Twilight joined her. "Fancy magical lights" she said with a chuckle. "I would've settled for a candle or a matchstick but ya won't see me complainin' t'see your magic again."

She examined every piece of dirt, trying to find tracks. She came across the book rather quickly and lifted it, arching a brow at Twlight. "Sometimes the cattle used'ta break loose and me n' Big ma---- we used'ta find em by the trail they left behind. Things that are trying to get away inna hurry have a knack for smashing the fence and whatnot. Dunno why I didn't think of looking here before. Glad *one* of us did. This yours?"
[12/11/13 11:00:33 PM] WilloWisp: Twi quietly took the book, tucking it away in her saddlebag with an awkward twist of her head. "It certainly is," she added once she was sure it was safely sealed away. She'd have to check for damage later. "So, I guess we're following, then?" she continued, pointing towards the pulled up fence.
[12/11/13 11:05:45 PM] Krissiejack: Applejack nodded. "Don't see any other option, unless you do." She lifted the fence a little more and pushed through it, trying to hold it open for Twilight, seeing as she had a cloak and, well, wings. "You just wait til I get my hooves on the pony who threw your book in the dirt like that."
[12/11/13 11:07:46 PM] Fethur: Applejack had emerged on a sidewalk beside the motel, and as she spoke the line, someone bumped her from behind. Wearing a hoodie pulled up over a small torso, the pony gasped and backed up. "S-sorry!"
[12/11/13 11:08:31 PM] Krissiejack: Can I get a bigger description?
[12/11/13 11:08:54 PM] Fethur: If either of you look at the pony, probably
[12/11/13 11:11:05 PM] WilloWisp: Twilight paused heading through the chainlink, not wanting to interrupt Applejack. Trying her best not to be seen, she glanced towards the person who had just bumped into her friend
[12/11/13 11:16:21 PM] Fethur: She - judging by the voice - was hard to make out. It was as though looking at her unfocused your vision, even in the soft light of Twilight's spell that projected from the alley. She was an off-white pony, a silvery purple. Her tail was dark purple, topped with white-teal in sprightly curls. It could be assumed her mane was similar beneath the blue winter hoodie, framed with white fur. She carried dufflebag, thrown over and hanging on her right side. As Twilight emerged from the fencing, she gasped in a short breath, and turned and sprinted down the path.
[12/11/13 11:16:50 PM] Krissiejack: yeah that's not suspicious at all
[12/11/13 11:17:17 PM] Krissiejack: Can AJ get a good look at her dufflebag as she turns? I'd like to write it into my post if I can
[12/11/13 11:18:12 PM] Fethur: The blurring of your vision when you look at her makes details hard to make out. There's some kind of tree design on the bag.
[12/11/13 11:18:19 PM] Krissiejack: DIE THIEF
[12/11/13 11:18:23 PM] Fethur: XD
[12/11/13 11:21:03 PM] Krissiejack: Applejack's eyes widened as the filly dashes off. She was going to turn to Twilight and chuckle at how their coming out of the woodworks behind a motel probably scared the kid, but the oddness of failing to see her properly mixed with what she thinks is a tree on the bag instead made Applejack grit her teeth.

"Twilight, that bag! It's Palm!"

She was already in a gallop after the filly as she shouted it to Twilight. "Wait! We ain't gonna hurt ya. C'mere!"
[12/11/13 11:27:30 PM] WilloWisp: Twilight stopped for a moment. "Wait, what?" She ran after AJ, confused; everything was happening all at once.
[12/11/13 11:38:09 PM] Krissiejack: one second
[12/11/13 11:46:36 PM] Krissiejack: ok
[12/11/13 11:48:24 PM] Fethur: Applejack was easily catching up to the filly. It wasn't even much of a fight, this chase. As the filly sprinted, a book spilled from the duffle's broken mouth. She paused to look at it but thought the better of retreating toward Applejack and started to run again at full speed, which was maybe half of Applejack's full gallop.
[12/11/13 11:50:26 PM] Krissiejack: Applejack jumped over the book and kept chasing. As she got near enough, she bolted in front of the filly then grinded to a halt, legs wide in a grounded stance. Between deep breaths, she said in the same tone she used to use to caution Applebloom. "Look here; I said stop, and I meant it. I just wanna ask you a question."
[12/11/13 11:52:12 PM] Fethur: The filly slid to a stop as well and stared wide-eyed at Applejack, who blocked the way forward. She took a few hesitant steps backward and looked behind her to Twilight, also chasing. She closed her eyes, tilted her head back, and her horn lit with yellow magic. She trembled as she stood, but the posture certainly indicated she was channeling a spell.
[12/12/13 12:02:03 AM] WilloWisp: Twilight ran onward, following the blur of orange ahead of her. She tensed her muscles up in the desperate hope to keep her wings locked, as she wasn't sure whether the cloak would stay down if she started running faster.

Rather than stop to pick up the book, she grabbed it with her horn; she couldn't stop to bother with it otherwise. As she finally started to catch up to the much more physically fit mare, she saw the filly's horn lighting up. "Stop!!!" she cried out, her own horn flashing as well.
[12/12/13 12:03:05 AM] Fethur: Anything in particular that Twi's doing with that horn?
[12/12/13 12:03:12 AM] Fethur: or is it just flashing
[12/12/13 12:06:09 AM] WilloWisp: Hm, probably trying to stop the other filly's magic. It's mostly a reactionary thing, so she hasn't entirely thought out what spell
[12/12/13 12:06:54 AM] Fethur: In that case
[12/12/13 12:11:58 AM] Fethur: The filly's magic grasped a cloud and pulled it down. Her magic filled it until rays of her golden glow started to split the wispy cotton. The magic occupied with the cloud, the blurry camo shakes off of the filly's coat - no longer channeled; it is only now that both mares can see something sparkling around the filly's neck in a golden hue. As Twilight spoke, she stopped, hesitating. There was something about an adult unicorn telling her to stop while using her own magic that the filly found threatening. "S-stay back or I'll... I'll use it." She takes a step toward Twilight, if only to get away from Applejack a little more, until she's evenly between the two.
[12/12/13 12:15:43 AM] Krissiejack: "Whoa now, little missy. We don't mean any trouble," Applejack said calmly, raising a hoof. She gulped at the threat, both from the implication, and from the tone; she sounded scared. Applejack sighed lightly and stepped back, giving her space.

"Why don't we all just settle down? Look, I'll prove I'm of no harm. I'm Applejack, and this here's Twilight Sparkle." She motioned to the alicorn.
[12/12/13 12:18:13 AM] Fethur: I'm waiting. I figured I should say that since I'm the one breaking turn order XD. Twilight's up
[12/12/13 12:18:24 AM] Krissiejack: lol
[12/12/13 12:27:59 AM] WilloWisp: Her element… Twilight's horn continued to glow softly, spells coming to mind. Finally after a few moments, she came to a decision. "Your, uh, book…" she said, taking her own book from the alley and floating it over to her. Maybe this would help…
[12/12/13 12:28:45 AM] Fethur: I'm almost disappointed that AJ hasn't tackled her yet
[12/12/13 12:28:49 AM] Krissiejack: XD
[12/12/13 12:28:59 AM] Fethur: I'd planned to have a battle but you guys are being nice
[12/12/13 12:29:12 AM] Fethur: color my happy that you arent attacking though, as far as development
[12/12/13 12:29:25 AM] Krissiejack: Your turn?
[12/12/13 12:29:27 AM] Fethur: yep
[12/12/13 12:33:03 AM] Fethur: "... Mirage," she responded with hesitation to Applejack's names.

The filly stared at Applejack, then turned defensively toward Twilight Sparkle as she levitated the book over. Her expression shifted to guilt and she bit her lip before grabbing the book in her magic and floated it back to Twilight. The cloud above her dispersed. She seemed to be deciding something.

"It's... your book." She stared at the floor before turning again on Applejack, this time with worry. Somewhere between injury and spite, she said, "Please just leave me alone. I'll give everything back. Just please don't call the guards. You win, okay? Take your stupid stuff."
[12/12/13 12:33:44 AM] Ruby Nights: ((What???? This is a Mirage rp?))
[12/12/13 12:33:55 AM] Krissiejack: ((gasp!))
[12/12/13 12:34:05 AM] Ruby Nights: ((I need to start stuff with Tempest. xD ))
[12/12/13 12:34:15 AM] Fethur: ((I needed a book thief! and I already owned one!))
[12/12/13 12:38:48 AM] Krissiejack: "The books. And a certain tiara you took from my friend," Applejack answered sternly, stepping toward Mirage in that big-sister-yes-you-are-in-trouble way she had about her naturally. "Didn't your mother ever teach'ya not to steal from other ponies? Yer lucky we're not mean ones."
[12/12/13 12:42:17 AM] Fethur: Skippy skip
[12/12/13 12:44:08 AM] Krissiejack: ((its hard finding a balance between AJ knowing how to talk to younger ponies thanks to Applebloom and being so hung up on avoiding family that she doesnt want to be sisterly))
[12/12/13 12:45:09 AM] Fethur: ((I'd say you are doing a good job so far))
[12/12/13 12:45:28 AM] Fethur: ((I can give you a good trigger to make AJ tone down the chastising if you want, when my turn comes back up))
[12/12/13 12:45:38 AM] Krissiejack: ((please do))
[12/12/13 12:49:43 AM] WilloWisp: Twilight shook her head at AJ. "You can keep this book; I've read it a thousand times already, it's one of my favorites," she told the filly, gently placing it in front of her. "But I need the other one. And the necklace. It's really important to me. I need it to…"

Her voice trailed off for a moment, before returning quieter than before. "I need it to protect my friends." She looked down towards the ground.
[12/12/13 12:57:20 AM] Fethur: "Dead," Mirage huffed at Applejack. There was something here more humid than arid; softer than anger. "So no. She died before getting the chance to teach me not to steal in order to survive alone."

She broke away again to stare at Twilight, confused, trying to figure her out. "You're just... giving this to me? For nothing...?" Her ears fell flat. With a hopeless shrug, she removed the bag and floated it toward Twilight in an exchange. "I don't... I don't normally take stuff like that.. Only.. things that won't be missed. But it looked like it was worth enough.. nevermind. Just.. sorry. Take it back. I needed it to protect my brother.."
[12/12/13 12:58:40 AM] Krissiejack: ((what WAS the cloud gonna do?))
[12/12/13 12:58:58 AM] Fethur: ((she needed moisture to make fog. smoke bomb.))
[12/12/13 12:59:16 AM] Krissiejack: ((clever. never without water if there's clouds XD))
[12/12/13 1:02:47 AM] Krissiejack: Applejack softened. With concern, she moved toward Mirage again with a tentative step as she addressed Twilight, then the floor. She pulled the corner of her lip up, torn between options. "I... know that feeling. Having to figure it out alone." She looked away and concentrated on the floor too, moving to sit beside Mirage if the filly would let her. "I take it you're the older sibling, like I was."

She kicked at the floor, sighing and looking over at Twilight with a longer sigh. "How's a crown gonna protect your brother? Do you know what it is?"
[12/12/13 1:05:25 AM] Fethur: "It's a gold gem-encrusted tiara," she answered in exasperation. She didn't move away from Applejack. She just.. sat down too, and tucked her tail in. "I'm tired of living on grass."

She pulled her hoodie lower over her horn again and closed her eyes, bowing her head. Then with a roll of the eyes: "Grass tastes like hoof."
[12/12/13 1:05:50 AM] Krissiejack: ((haha hoof))
[12/12/13 1:06:18 AM] Fethur: ((I was gonna make a manure joke but it's not in-character for Mirage. It is for CALLIE.))
[12/12/13 1:08:12 AM] WilloWisp: ((I'm leaving this to Applejack))
[12/12/13 1:19:30 AM] Krissiejack: Applejack sighed again, and took to staring at her Element of Honesty necklace, the shiny orange apple on it reminding her cruelly of things she was avoiding. She tried to focus on the necklace instead of the other thoughts. Why was it an apple? Was she Honesty or was it the other way around? Why was it *orange* instead of red. It didn't really fit her if it wasn't red. It should be a red apple. Unfortunately, ignoring Mirage wasn't going to make her go away, or change the subject, so she reluctantly returned to it.

If Mirage was anything else like AJ, too, she wouldn't take a handout, even though Applejack still had the money from the last harvest on her. No, a filly that's resorted to stealing was far beyond just taking help. So Applejack stood up with a grunt and moved to Twilight.

"Can I ask ya why ya came back? You were walking *toward* the motel."

She made a point of blocking the filly's vision with her tail while she emptied out Twilight's belongings from the bag, and placed her wallet deep inside it before zipping it up and carrying it back over to Mirage.
[12/12/13 1:20:19 AM] Fethur: ((awwww))
[12/12/13 1:20:24 AM] Fethur: ((the feels))
[12/12/13 1:20:39 AM] Krissiejack: ((she's not an asshole. she just doesnt want anyone to know that. XD))
[12/12/13 1:22:20 AM] Fethur: "I made a vow not to take anything valuable," she explained. "Only things people don't miss. Books. Paper. Bits of food. I was... coming back to sneak the crown back into your room."

It was Mirage's turn to sigh.

"I am the worst thief ever." She cocked her head at Twilight, who had been silent for a bit now. "How does it protect your friends?"
[12/12/13 3:43:39 PM] WilloWisp: Twilight looked up and managed to . "Can you keep a secret?" she asked Mirage, leaning in close to the little filly to whisper. "It's magic. But it only works when I'm with my friends." She sighed, looking over to Applejack; what a terrible job of being with her friends she was.
[12/12/13 3:52:01 PM] Fethur: "I... see." Mirage blinked. "It sounds pretty useful, then. To have friends." She smiled awkwardly at Twilight. "Consider yourself lucky."

She picked up her bag from Applejack and strapped it over her shoulder again. "I really am sorry. I should have never taken something so important to you and your friends... I.. should get back to my brother.. I don't have any fancy way of keeping him safe. I just have to keep him out of trouble."
[12/12/13 3:59:07 PM] Krissiejack: Applejack returned to their sides and almost looked sad as Mirage was preparing to go. She wanted to ask her so many things, like where she lived, and would she be alright, and please don't tell anyone about our magical artifacts, and you just wait, kid, we'll make the world a better place.. for you. For fillies like you who truly deserved better. But instead, she punched Mirage lightly in the shoulder with a hoof, the way siblings do. The way she would for Applebloom when words didn't really cut that feeling of struggling to make things work.

"Since you know our secret, that must make you our friend too, ain't that right, Twilight? You ever need your friends, you find us, okay?" It made her sore that she really had no address to give Mirage for that. "Go to Sweet Apple Acres in Ponyville and ask for Spike. Tell em Applejack sent you. Okay?"

She hoped Sol wouldn't mind that.
[12/12/13 3:59:43 PM] Fethur: ((ITS SO HARD TO ROB YOU WHEN YOU ARE NICE))
[12/12/13 3:59:52 PM] WilloWisp: ((Skip Twi xD))
[12/12/13 4:04:03 PM] Fethur: Mirage didnt really understand the instructions - not the reason she would go all the way to Ponyville for something like that, but it sounded like a good idea to log the information, if things here ever got out of hand... if her life was compromised... it felt nice to have a friend. She smiled again, pulling her hood down as she did it. She punched Applejack lightly back.

"Sure thing. If you ever need a certified street rat with watermancy, ask around for the Manehattan Lakehouse Ghost. Don't ask." She rolled her eyes. "Take care of each other, okay? I know from experience that Manehattan's a pretty rough and tumble place to be in, and no offense, but you guys don't act like Manehattan ponies. Use your saddlebags as your pillow if you don't want them taken."

She turned to leave, waving a hoof as she walked away. She wasn't one for goodbyes, and she felt that those two, nice as they seemed, weren't the kind of ponies she'd run into again anymore soon.
[12/12/13 4:05:36 PM] Krissiejack: Applejack lingered in the silence for a bit before taking off her hat and brushing the dust off it. "Hey, Twilight...?"
[12/12/13 5:07:15 PM] WilloWisp: "Yes?" Twi said softly, putting everything slowly back into her bag.
[12/12/13 5:12:19 PM] Krissiejack: "Have I... I just.." She replaced her hat on her head and waited for Twilight to finish packing stuff up. "You called us your friends. Here I thought you might've forgetten that word, sugarcube."
[12/12/13 5:14:30 PM] Fethur: ((d'aw moments))
[12/12/13 5:17:33 PM] WilloWisp: "I…" Twilight started, but then went quiet. After a long pause, with her putting the tiara back, not around her neck, but where it belonged. "It's a scary word. I just felt so useless… and everyone thought…" her throat felt hoarse; she stopped talking for a moment. "I'm sorry."
[12/12/13 5:42:15 PM] Krissiejack: Applejack risked a nuzzle, before nodding toward the road to indicate they should get on walking. She took to stepping ahead of Twilight, expecting the alicorn to follow her. "Well, I don't know a lick about 'everyone' but I thought I'd lost all of you way back when.
