Applejack smiled at her friend, pulling her into a small hug to calm her nerves. "Without your element, you're still the unicorn who found the elements, Twilight; and that's all we need. I ain't anymore myself with this thing on than without it. Y'wanna wear mine for now so ya got something t'keep til we find yours?" She took it off again and looked at it nervously. Truth be told, she wasn't all that calm. She was panicking and it was all she could do not to hyperventilate with Twilight watching her, looking at her with those guide-me eyes. Her face hardened, then she gazed sternly at Twilight with a wry smile. "Now let's just think. Trust me, here, okay? We'll find your necklace and that's a promise. But we gotta move fast. When a cow breaks the fence, it leaves tracks. So we just gotta find some clues to where the cow went, right? Simple. I've lasso'd my share of 'em in my day, so you just help me get the thief in sight, and we'll have your necklace back faster'n you can say 'horsefeathers!'" |

Twilight smiled, a small breath escaping as her eyes shifted downward; she wanted to believe in what Applejack was saying, she really did, but there wasn't much that she could do, and she knew it. Even if there had been some evidence, she'd probably messed it up when she'd cleaned up looking for the element... "Then what would you say we do?' She said, looking around while avoiding . Maybe if she could just use a little magic… It was a magical tiara after all, and she could probably just use a spell… her horn glowed a gentle lavender for a moment before she cut her thoughts short, and her magic with them. No. that wasn't her anymore… "Is there any way I can help?" she added, her subdued voice shaking with confusion. (Gah I'm not happy with the ending but this post has been sitting for a month and I'm happy with what I have, I just want more, so I'm going to post this and edit if I come up with anything worth adding.) |

Applejack nodded, pulling a hoof across her chest in a hurrah motion. "Now that's the spirit!" She thought a moment to herself, trying to ignore that she had seen Twilight's horn light up for a second. It was probably best not to push her on it. She fixed her own necklace around herself in its rightful place and trotted to the door of their room. "Why don't we head down to breakfast, and ask around while we're there? You can help me get - whatcha call 'em - testimonials. Someone's outta found something by now." She opened the door wide. |

It was a lot more encouraging than she really would have expected it to be; she couldn't get her missing element off her mind, but at least she felt a little better about finding it. "Thanks," she whispered, pulling her cloak tighter around her. That little bit of encouragement was enough to get her mind racing, going over different ways they might do something. "Testimonies," she said to Applejack absentmindedly. "The word you're looking for is… Oh nevermind." It was silly, bothering with little details right now. It was a pretty good idea, after all; at the very least they could have some breakfast. Still, she couldn't help but feel like they were missing something. "I don't… Don't tell them we were robbed," she added as they walked out the door. |

"Testimonies," Applejack repeated gruffly with a grin. Normally, arguing semantics wasn't her style, but even that small upset to the lead showed that Twilight still had some fight in her, and Applejack would at least acknowledge that for a brief second, that brave unicorn she remembered from that mysterious night had shown brightly through what this alicorn had destroyed in her. "I ain't z'actly the best liar, Twilight," she said, curling one side of her frown up to match her furrowed brow. She adjusted her hat and led the way anyway to the breakfast area. Honestly, she was a better liar than before, anyway. "But I'll do my best if it means we get your crown-thingy back." |

Rock-a-Bye could be found just past the main lobby and into the breakfast hall, serving around a pot of coffee to the hungry residents of the motel. She smiled as Applejack and Twilight Sparkle arrived. "'Was wondering when you would show your faces around here," she said with a friendly chuckle. "Most newcomers get lost, and I have to go make sure the darlings have eaten. Did you have a good night?" The room contained a handful of ponies - no, smaller than that. There were about 6 total in the room besides the hostess and the mares. A family of four, and a young couple. Rock-a-Bye held up a coffee pot and arched a brow inquisitively at the two mares. |

"We slept just fine, thank you," Twilight said with a forced smile, before her friend could respond; she glanced back towards Applejack for just a moment before giving Rock-a-Bye her attention again. Since Applejack wasn't good at lying, she'd have to talk… She didn't quite believe that no one in the hotel had to do with the robbery, not yet at least. "Actually, there was quite a ruckus going on last night. Not that it made it any harder to sleep," she added, trying her best to make it sound casual. "Did you see anything?" Get them talking about last night, see if anything comes up while they're talking… She moved to have a seat while waiting for a response, trying to hide how nervous she was; this was the most she'd talked in ages, and she was already feeling a little strained. |

Applejack offered a sincere smile to Twilight Sparkle then continued pretending nothing was wrong. She whistled, adjusted her pony tail, fixed her hat down lower over her eyes, looked around at each pony, glared at the couple in the corner for no particular reason, and leaned against a shelf, accidentally breaking it. In a stuttered silence except for the clanking of coffee pitchers and a vase hitting the floor, Applejack tried to catch all the pieces falling, missing most of them. She managed to grab a coffee pot by the bottom. "Hot hot hot hot hot hot," Applejack hissed, tossing the pot and letting it clatter to the floor as well. She looked around with wide, guilty eyes, smiled and chuckled and slumped in the chair next to Twilight. "Heh... heheh... heh... a'hem ... you were saying?" She smiled in a cheesy way. Lying was hard. Edited by Applejack, Wed Oct 16, 2013 11:39 am.

The old mare stared hard at Applejack in a confused way. After the noise died down from her, and with a smacking of her lips with every new sentence, she answered Twilight, "A ruckus? Why no... I slept like a log. There was this little tiny thing of a filly who came by around midnight and asked for food, but otherwise, nothing." Her tone shifted when she mentioned the filly, but otherwise offered a pilfered smile at Applejack and Twilight. She absently poured some morning glory tea for Twilight, and held the pot up in offer to Applejack. "Unless you'd rather have coffee, but you might have had enough of that," she added with a chuckle. |

Twilight nodded absently towards the hotel manager, sipping the tea offered as she continued to turn possibilities over in her head. Maybe the filly could have broken in? It's possible, not enough evidence for it though… Although it would make getting out of that window much easier… she looked over at Applejack, then back to Rock-a-bye. "Um, thanks for the tea," she said, avoiding eye contact before looking back to her tea. She let out a quick breath, taking another sip of tea. That's right. Testimonies. She should see if she could get any more information about the filly; it made a certain amount of sense, after all. Afterwards they could talk to the other guests, see if they could establish some sort of scene... "I'm kind of curious about this filly, if you don't mind telling me a little more," she said to Rock-a-bye, giving her an awkward smile. "Why would she look for food here? Doesn't she have a family?" |
