Twilight Sparkle

Twilight smiled softly, taking comfort in Applejack's homely attitude. "Certainly. But what are you doing on the ground then?" she said, making a face at her. "You shouldn't have to sleep alone." Getting up, she picked up the blankets with her magic and set them on the bed, offering AJ a spot. If anyone deserved to sleep comfortably it was her, not Twilight. "I could use the company. Especially since..."

She paused, a slight yawn escaping her mouth despite her best efforts. Especially since she still couldn't be trusted.

Applejack looked at her with a homely smile then got up to move to the bed. She nodded reassuringly. "Not keen on hogging the whole bed, huh? That's mighty generous of you, Twilight." She pretended not to notice the pause, and unfinished sentence. Instead, she fluffed up the pillows and got ready for bed, looking enthused about getting some needed rest in a comfortable spot.

"Thank ya kindly, Twilight Sparkle; I think this is just fine - like a sleepover, right?" She laughed, leaning over to hover a hoof by the candle that lit the room. "Goodnight...?"

Twilight gave a light smile at Applejack's response, crawling into bed shortly after she did and doing her best keeping her wings out of the way. Over a year now and she still felt awkward with the new appendages... "You know this'll be my first sleepover," she said jokingly, stifling a yawn. "It's a little exciting... The idea, I mean."

Keeping her cloak drawn up around her, even in bed, Twilight tried to let AJ have both blankets, curling up tight. "G'night," she said, nodding, her mind running several things over in her head. She should at least try to get some sleep, even if they didn't know what they were doing and she should still be trying to help her friends and... Her breathing was harsh as she clenched her eyes.

Applejack could clearly remember her last sleepover. She could tell Twilight stories of family reunions and the final nights before everyone went back home where the fillies and colts would stay out late into the night counting stars and telling stories over a fire. She could stay all of that, but it hurt her to think it all again, and compare it consciously to the new family Apple Gale managed.

"N-Next time we're out campin', I owe you a good old fashioned ghost story," Applejack choked back a lump in her throat. She lay facing her end of the bed, staring hard at the radiator. She put out the candle and let the room sink into only moonlit darkness from the single window. She waited until Twilight lied down then Applejack sat up for a moment. She undid her hair bands and quietly brushed her mane for a moment, closing her eyes, trying to remember how Granny Smith used to do it when she was a filly.

She sat there in a brief silence then flopped back down on her side, stopping a moment to take one blanket and rest it over Twilight, who she thought was asleep. Her hoof rested a second too long on Twilight's shoulder as she vaguely remembered tucking Apple Bloom to bed each night.

"Goodnight, Twilight Spakle..."

She curled up, folding her blanket over herself tightly, snugly toward the center of the bed to be closer to her friend. They both seemed to need some comfort, but Applejack wouldn't admit that. She stayed awake for a time before finally tuckering out, losing herself in restless sleep.

With no sun, the winter was colder now than they might remember of their old Equestria, and it was always colder in the early morning in cities, before businesses opened and fireplaces were rekindled. Their radiator had gone on the fritz again, clanking loudly sometime around eight in the morning as the now-open window above it let in a chilled breeze; powdered snow started to blow in, floating lightly about the room.

And the room itself was in disarray. A few drawers were left open haphazardly, and Applejack's hat was on the floor. At the foot of the bed, Applejack's saddlebag was open, three apples spilled to the floor, but the rest of the food was missing. Twilight's bag was ransacked equally, the Sin book vanished, and with it, something precious: The Element of Magic.

Twilight woke quietly, feeling as though she'd never slept a wink. Still so hard to keep her mind free… she had done this to escape, hadn't she? She sighed softly, moving to get up, her cloak still drawn around her. she ran a hoof along the clasp, looking for her element to reassure herself…

Her Element. Where was it? She had had it around her neck when she went to bed, didn't she? It was never too far away from her… she scrambled out of bed, seeing the state in their room and starting to panic. Her horn glowed brightly as she picked everything up, keeping track of every little thing she picked up and looking it over carefully. Maybe you accidentally dropped it before you went to bed? It's just under the bed, right; this isn't what it looks like and you or Applejack just got up late last night to get food, and you'll find the element beneath something… "Ohhh, where is it where is it?" she said in an increasingly frantic voice.

Everything was back in saddlebags or on the table, but she'd discovered that it was even worse than she could have imagined. Not only was her element missing, so were the books she'd taken along with her. What could they do? Without the elements… "Oh no," she said quietly. "Appo'jack! Applejack, wake up!"

"Ah... Apple Bloom..." Applejack pulled a pillow over her head. The rest came out a muffled yawn, "I know yer excited for the rodeo but it ain't open til noon. Go back to bed..."

She rolled over, used to her real bed being much bigger, and rolled right out onto the floor into a pile of snow that had come from the open window. She yelped and rolled over and sat up and scrambled away from it, shivering lightly now. Wild eyes planted themselves on Twilight.

"What... what happened? What's with the window? Didja miss camping outside or somethin'?" Applejack yawned again, shaking her head to wake up. She slowly took in the room. "What... happened...? Twilight?"

"I... I don't know," Twilight said, her voice shaky. "The Element... The Element is gone! It was around my neck last night and some books are gone too and..." She stopped, struggling to breathe. Her horn glowed, and she started to pick everything up yet again. She hadn't triple checked yet... Maybe.... No, she was absolutely right, it was missing. "I don't know what happened!" She said, barely keeping herself from panicking. What if it was Nightmare Moon had found them? What if they couldn't find it again. "Ohhh," she fussed, looking around.

"Maybe... Maybe I just misplaced it," she said, knowing it wasn't true. Someone must've come into their room last night, she was sure of it. The only problem was, what could they do about it?

"Now, now just calm down a second, Twilight. Let me get the gist of it," Applejack waved a hoof slowly in a calming gesture and took a breath, trying to contain how nervous this made her too. She didn't have time to panic, however. Twilight needed her, and she needed to be strong.

She got up and went over to the foot dresser at the base of the bed and lifted her hat, placing it on her head; sure enough her Element was under it. She stared at it recklessly and fastened it around her neck this time, not trusting it to the hat anymore given the circumstances. It felt heavier than before. She spent a few minutes searching about the room, locking on the open window.

She tried her best to keep level-headed, but the facts of the room spoke volumes. "It's as clear as crystal we've been rustled..." She stopped, gauging Twilight. "But if anyone took from us, they can't have gone far."

Twilight sighed, trying to calm herself down but failing, fidgeting a little. "I know, I know," she said finally, glancing around nervously. What on earth could they do, though? She could barely trust herself to keep a spell up to hide her identity, let alone try and track anything, and her element was gone. "What can we do?" she finally said, forcing herself to admit her own helplessness. "Without my element I…"
