(This thread was lost in the move. Below is a short summary of the lost content; it was too new to have any cache) Five inns. They had been to five inns, and all of them were full; the pair had arrived, running away from Ponyville and towards something different, towards, in this case Manehattan, but it seemed that there wasn't anywhere for them to stay. Twilight, her wings cloaked & her element hiding around her neck, looked around, overwhelmed and more than a little bit scared by the large, dark, and strange city; clinging closely to Applejack, she was beginning to wonder if she hadn't made a mistake. Everything that she had tried to do so far seemed to have gone wrong, and even here, her confidence had lead them to five empty inns and a city she didn't know anything about. Applejack, casually exuding confidence, didn't seem deterred; Sure, Manehattan was different from the way it was when she had been there, but she had food, and if worse came to worst they could always camp somewhere in the city. She did her best to alleviate Twi's concerns, maintaining a calm attitude. "Try a sixth?" "Sure." The sixth inn they'd tried this night; Applejack came forward and knocked on the door. Maybe this time they'd have better luck? Surely every inn in Manehattan couldn't be filled up, that didn't make any sense. Twi continued to hang back, worried about revealing who she was. |

((as stated before, I'm not in the turn order, so skip me. I'll check often enough to cut in as needed.)) The door opened to reveal a kindly looking elderly unicorn mare, with pink coat and bleached white mane. Her cutie mark was that of a rocking chair. She tied her mane into a loose bun and tightened a robe she wore around herself before addressing the two with a gingerly smile. "Well, I'll be-" she smiled wider, the wrinkles around her mouth drawing lines to her dimples. "Welcome to the Hayseed Hotel, girlies. I'm Rock-a-bye, the hostess. Come in, come in." She said the lines mechanically but sweetly, as if she'd said them a hundred times today but is clearly trying to be hospitable despite it. She stood back and waved Twilight and Applejack into the main lobby before moving to a small end table near the door and levitating a book up to read it, at the same time as a pair of reading glasses to balance on her nose. "We have four rooms available if you sweeties are checking in. The rate is 2 bits a night per bed. Each room only has one bed, I'm afraid, but if you two are a young couple, it's just big enough for two." She smooshed her words and magically pinched one of Applejack's cheeks as she said the last line with a wink and a laugh. |

Applejack smiled reassuringly. "Y'see, Twilight? A little gumption and we've got ourselves a place that might take us in tonight. Not all bad in the wide-wild-world of Equestria...!" She took off her hat as she entered, following after the old mare. "It's a pleasure to meet'cha Miss Rock-a-bye; I'm Applejack, and this here's Twilight Sparkle, my close friend." She nodded assuredly at Twilight again and let the mare check the books before nodding then backing away and smiling embarassingly at the pinched cheek, rubbing it. "O-oh - we're not a couple, ma'am. Just traveling companions, and old friends. But I'm sure we can make do with one room. Ain't the first time I've slept the ground 'stead of a soft feathery thing." She stepped toward Twilight comfortingly, keeping closer to her friend than the stranger. "Sound good, Twi?" |

Twilight looked over the mare offering them a room, doing her best to keep close to Applejack. She seemed nice enough, and the rooms were really cheap. That seemed a bit strange in and of itself, especially when it was so empty, but she was too exhausted to worry that much about it. She hesitated when AJ turned to her... she was still not quite sure about dealing with other ponies; she drew her cloak around her tighter, trying to make sure her wings didn't betray them. Still, it would be nice to sleep in a bed. "That's fine," she said to Applejack, nodding. "But you shouldn't have to sleep on the floor," she added more quietly. It didn't seem right that Applejack would be the one to go without a bed - she was the reason that they were in such bad straits. She didn't have any bits or food in her saddlebags - just a few books, paper and parchment. Edited by Twilight Sparkle, Thu Mar 7, 2013 5:52 pm.

The old mare took their names for the guest book, and guided them to their room with a lantern to light the path before them. She took them up a small staircase to the second floor of the rooms, and stopped at 140B. It was a small room - cozy, one might suppose - with a single bed tucked into a corner, and a private bathroom that forced the main room into an odd shape. A radiator under a window on the far wall hummed loudly and clanked until the mare gave it a little kick. "Oh, it does that sometimes. Sorry, dears. But you've got a roof over your heads for the night, and newly laundered blankets here for sleeping. I've brought alone some extra pillows and blankets so you two can situate however you like." She moved to the door and handed the key to Twilight Sparkle, because she was closer. "Relax. Rest. Stop by the lobby when you wake up - I usually have a little breakfast for the residents ready. You kids have a pleasant night." She took a small bow, smiled, and closed the door behind her. |

Applejack stood there awkwardly by the door after it had shut, then pushed her saddlebags off her back and walked into the room. It was a little drab, somewhat chilly despite the radiator, and there was a dripping sound from the bathroom, but the mare was right, it was a roof over their heads, and it came cheap. The radiator started clanking again and Applejack stopped to buck it back into behaving before smiling big at Twilight. "Well," she said with a shrug, "T'ain't much, but it's kinda cozy once ya get used to it, I guess. What do ya say we make the most of what we got and get ourselves some rest?" |

The moment that the other mare had left the room, Twilight let out a breath she'd been holding in. "Probably the coziest I've seen in a while," she said light-heartedly, easing up onto one side of the bed but not removing her cloak or saddle bags. She hadn't actually had a bed in more than a year, now... even something like this. "I'm sorry about this," She said to AJ, sighing. "I thought I knew what I was doing, but I'm just relying on you." |

"Aw, don't worry 'bout it none, Sugarcube," Applejack said with a faint smile. "Equestria's more different from our old one than an apple to an orange, so I don't expect ya to have a plan or nothing. I don't have one myself..." The last sentence was a little more hesitant, relying on a truth she didn't like admitting anymore than the next pony. She tossed her hat off, throwing it onto the little dresser in front of the bed, her harmony necklace still nestled under it. After a moment to stretch a limb sore from walking, she sat next to Twilight on the bed and hooked a hoof around her in a friendly hug. "We're in this together, Sugarcube, and that means I need ya as much as you need me, else I wouldn't even be here. I'd be back in Ponyville trying to set a world record for love handles. So chin up, Twilight. We'll figure this out as we go, alright?" |

Twilight smiled slowly, quietly accepting the other mare's hug but looking away while she did so, her thoughts turning towards other things. Where could they go? What could she possibly offer, if it wasn't a plan? She was the liability here... she shook those thoughts from her head, not letting them consume her. Floating her saddlebags aside, but keeping her cloak drawn close and her element loosely around her neck, she sighed. "We will," she finally said, returning the hug. "Maybe we should go to Canterlot next," she mused aloud, more to herself than to AJ. She'd been avoiding that place for... well, a lot of reasons. "It's not like we have anywhere else to go..." a yawn escaped her mouth at the end, despite her best efforts; she was exhausted. |

Applejack caught the yawning bug and released one herself, louder, and with a little note to her voice like a sigh. With half-lidded eyes, she got up and fetched the extra blankets and pillows that the elderly mare had left for her on the chair in the corner. She started forming something of a sleeping bag out of them at the foot of the bed. "Can't hurt to see the place. Y'know I've never actually been there before...? Canterlot, I mean." She yawned again. Goodness. Had they been up and about that long? "You could show me 'round your hometown, Twilight. I bet it's all fanc---ee.. and.... full of..... fan...s" She had rested her head on a pillow and started to knock out. She shook herself back awake, but it was obvious she was tired too. She yawned again. "What say we talk over breakfast tomorrow. Even roosters sleep before sunrise." |
