DANCING ON, DANCING ON, DANCING ON RAIN---
It was only now on seeing Hookshot and noting the blood on her weapon that Leon finally felt like a child again. Did she...? Was he willing to ever resort to that? Would they get out of here if he didn't...? He thought of Eponine, downstairs, brimming with some mythic energy he couldn't hope to understand; the forced bonding of two counter-magicks manifested into that "little girl" who now carried two very adult powers. He wondered to himself if Eponine ever felt small and childish too after she took a life. If she ever regretted it. He thought to ask her, but she probably would only stare with those glassy doll eyes and ignore the question. He wondered what in Hookshot's life let her kill without flinching.

"Aydan's got a bounty on us. Must've told the entire city. I have no idea how he found out where we live since this place isn't in Dwayne's name but here we are with the entire city's worth of thugs looking for us," he spoke matter-of-factly, brushing over his afterthoughts by wiping his face against his shoulder. "Nine's downstairs holding them off. She's gonna blow this place sky high, and I don't know about you - but I don't wanna be here when it happens."

His arms were shaky, and he swung his arms a little higher up to keep Hopper comfortable in them, trying to nest Hopper's head in the crook of Leon's neck instead of letting his head hang down over Leon's arm. He gritted his teeth as he looked at Hopper, the smaller boy laying broken in Leon's arms, old bruises still standing out on his tan skin, arm still casted and in a sling. With his fever flaring, Hopper looked more pale and dewy from sweat.

Their leader took inventory. Dwayne had a chunk of rock missing from one shoulder where the attackers had tried to pierce his organic armor. Aerie looked the image of a valkyrie, but her hair was frizzing from static, and her wings were sluggish in how they held her. Leon must've looked the part too, with his torn jacket, bleeding shoulder, a trickled smear of blood still fresh from his lip. Leon's leggings were torn and his thigh had a nasty gash, with the skin around it going plum. He and Dwayne were covered in assorted bruisings, and Aerie's fingers were burned from her own lightning, she had summoned such a strong blast of it.

He hoped Eponine was okay.

What was begun could not be stopped. To do so would be to try to uncook meat. To remove the charred bits of skin and replant it in the animal and see a hare hop again. But still, the girl wove her fingers through her hair, pulling at the roots and the white skin pulled taut. Her eyes still blacked, a drop of ink spilled from one like a single tear rolling down her face, until more joined like smudged mascara. Thick black lines of tears ran from her waterline to her chin then started to soak into the white jacket's tight collar. She screamed, but it wasn't her scream. It was thicker, guttural, as Eponine stared motionless at the corpse before her. There was no way, she knew, to turn it back into a live rabbit. There was no trick for that.

The thick ink poured from her eyes, from a tendril of drool out of the corner of her dry, cracked lips. She felt it on her fingers, oozing under the nails, starting to fill her boots from her toes. Her movements were jerky, trying to move in thick tar that only she could feel but each pore of her skin sweated it out. She knew without looking that the bile was pouring out. Her scream was a banshee's wail, unnatural and echoing in the hall, and through the manor, filling every brick and board. She felt the liquid like a fine sheen across her body beneath these unbreathing clothes.

When the scream ended, she fell to her knees, staring down the hallway at a myriad of bodies. No. Of rabbits, that wouldn't hop. She begged, willed, forced them to hop. Her magic grasped at a chunk nearby and raised it and dropped it in dead weight where it splotched and stained the rug again. She tried again. She was throwing sponges of red paint at the floor. Nothing.

"If you.... cross... the threshold..." her voice wavered in the thick air that choked her out. She could taste the iron of their bodies in the mist as Eponine forced herself to shaking, bowed legs. She was leaning forward, supporting herself with levitation at the shoulders, like a ragdoll being held by a careless owner. She looked through the foyer hallway, through the open door, to the goetian woman. Eponine's eyes could barely be discerned from the veil of black hair that fell over her face. "Then you welcome It. This is not a warning."

Her voice gave out to a deeper voice of a man grown: "It's an invitation." From her back the oil exploded out, forming almost wings made of the source of her magic. They were more like spider legs, connecting at her shoulders to marionette the girl, and help her stand stiff at the end of that hallway.

Those who saw this...affront to nature and all things decent were shaken. That sound should not escape a girl so small nor should this feeling of death on the air. This was far beyond what they expected. This girl...no...thing was far and away the most disturbing thing they have seen. The unlucky bastards close to her turned into what amounts to some for of salsa. So most that had any sense of self preservation ran like the devil was on their heels into the night. Sparks stood at the door wide eye.

"That...OK. I have to admit you little demon, that is some freaky shit. Real freaky shit. But I wonder about something."

Sparks took a deep breath feeling the familiar feeling of her magic flowing over her fingers and her body with sparks of electricity firing across her. She looked to see who remained ,a good half dozen, and motioned for the magic users to get ready.

"I wonder how much can you take. I ain't about to die to something that look like it crawled out of the ass end of the abyss. Now please be kind and die. Light this place up, torch it!"

She raised her hands towards her whatever this girl was and fire bolts of lighting towards her. Several thugs braced themselves and let of shots of fire towards the walls and halls and whatever they could hit. Desperation and fear poured off them in almost palpable waves.

She probably could have dodged it if not for one flaw in the design: the soft chuffing of a gryphon whimpering behind her. She could dodge it easily, but she hadn't the attention to maintain this magic and grab Grass. It was only a split second, but for that frozen moment, her eyes gained clarity and became their common crimson again as she stared dead into the strike. She forced her tendrils before her, but it pierced each layer like tearing flower petals until it hit her just between the breasts, lightning splitting across her skin and short-circuiting the vital organs.

She fell to her knees again with eyes widened in stunned shock. Her tee, already loose enough to reveal a shoulder, was torn to tatters that barely hung to her burned torso. She ran a trembling hand across her stomach and examined the palm: no stains of thick darkness. She heaved her shoulders in one tight breath as she fell over and rolled to her back, one arm falling daintily by her head. She looked at the unharmed gryphon just behind her and a small smile played on her face as the two made hazy contact.

"...G-Grass... you're..." Eponine's eyes rolled back and her eyes fluttered closed as she drew in another breath. But even as she inhaled, she couldn't feel anything else operating inside her cold body.

Serendipity

Hopper tossed and turned in Leon's arms. He mumbled, "No... no one calls her... a freak..... except me..."

His eyes shot open at the same time that Grass made another shriek, this one smaller, from down the stairs near the group. Hopper wrestled out of Leon's arms, falling to the floor. He landed on the bad elbow...

"Nn... fffuuuuuuuuu," he inhaled through his teeth, pulling his legs under him and standing. He had to brace on the wall but he lumbered toward the stairs. "E... Eponine.... ... she needs..." His arm slid from the wall as he fell and tried to stand again, but the fever made it a failed task so now he did his best to inch toward the stairs, tripping and falling every few steps.

Yulessia

Aerie kneeled beside him and held him back with one palm on his chest and the other wrapping around Hopper's shoulders. Even if she wasn't four years his senior, she would be strong enough to stop him from moving too much in his current state. "H-Hopper, you need to stop. You're going to die. If Eponine is in trouble..." She looked at Leon, then to Dwayne then Hookshot, before her eyes widened. "If Grass dies down there..."

Hopper struggled in vain to get out of Aerie's grip. He twisted his hips and tried to push her, but it was useless. He didn't stop putting up a fight though.

Hearing Hopper say her name was all Leon needed. He didn't even take the stairs. He jumped the banister at the top and landed at the bottom, shouting as he dropped: "Aerie, we need you too! Crusaders...!"

He took a battle stance before Eponine, barely having time to scan the foyer for what had happened or what the damage was. The others would catch up and check on her. Someone needed to take station at the frontline.

Dwayne had been watching the exchange but now he lumbered to the stairs, swung down them. He picked up momentum at the bottom and full charged, jumped over Eponine - the sight of her laying pale on the cold floor sending his rage amping to max warp drive - and crashed with a bang into anyone stupid enough to be between him and lightningwhore, who he football tackled.

"See look at that she isn't so scary. Finish her of-" Sparks felt her world flip several times as something with force of a mountain slammed into her. A loud ringing in her ear made her eyes bleary for a moment. She glanced at what ever it was that had hit her seeing an angry...rock?

"What? You just don't know when to quit!" She gritted her teeth, tasting iron in her mouth from the hit and trying to force more sparks to her fingers. The other remaining thugs saw that rock fae thing charge back out through some of the guys and hit Sparks. They were about to try to help when she shook her head and motioned to downed girl. "I got this. Fucking kill them you jagoffs." The four magic users left focused fire into their hands to toss another bombardment into the room.
