Pinion (pl. Pinions)

I am your wings but you are my wind.

APPEARANCE
Size: Pinions are shorter than fae at full height by about half a foot, averaging 4.5ft to 5.5ft instead.
Type: Mammal
Sound/ Cry: Common, Pinions speak an adapted version of Eyrie called Fledgeline. It's about as similar as Italian and Spanish, allowing for some shared understanding. Their alphabet is separate from common or Eyrie.
Color Range: Pinions are usually much paler than fae, allowing them to blend in with the night sky. Their colors are usually more thematically sky themed with pale skin (white hair is the most common), with most being almost albino. Pinion colors always complement their gryphon's colors.
Defining Features: Pinion wings are attached to their arms, large feathered wings extending and folding with the bend of their arms, extending from shoulder blades to wrists like a shawl. Fangs. They have bird tails as well, large plumes extending from their tailbones. Their fingers are clawed naturally. They sport ears closer to the tops of their heads resembling a meowl's ears.

NAMING CONVENTIONS
Pinons and gryphons are named together as a single compound word. For instance, if their name is Skylark, then one of their names is Sky and the other is Lark. Pinions generally use a formal "we" when they introduce themselves ("We are Skylark.") but otherwise shift easily between referring to themselves as a unit, and maintaining individuality. Each of their separate names are generally a verb or noun with some meaning that when combined, creates a compound word.

PERSONALITY
Alignment: Sentient
Aggression Level: Defensive
Defining Behavior: Pinions come from different tribes, but culturally, their central town is simply a series of cave veins tunneled together within the large western mountain ranges. Pinions are sent as young as age 5 to help defend entrances and paths in the mountains to keep it safe from outsiders.

At the coming of age, pinion young are brought to gryphon nests and observed. If a gryphon egg hatches when an unbonded pinon touches the egg, the two are pair bonded for life. The magic of this bond is so strong that they form an unspoken telepathic understanding of each other's intent. In addition, pinions and gryphons share a single life span once bonded, dying if the other dies, and feeling each other's emotions/energy. While gryphons might live unbonded for a century, pinion life spans appear to be only 10 years (maturity takes 20 years) in isolation. Once bonded, the two die together, with the pinion borrowing half the life span of the gryphon. Such is the magic of the Dusty Mountains that border Lyria to the west.

CAPABILITIES
Skills: Pinions cannot fly, but they can glide on their wings (you try FLAPPING YOUR ARMS to gain height). This lets them jump from mountain cliff to cliff easily, navigating the rough terrain. They've gained a mobility in their flight that's to be reckoned with only by the foolish. They are light enough that they can ride gryphons (only the one they have bonded with is domesticated to them) and help the gryphon do tighter maneuvers than it could alone by using their tails and wings as support rudders. This has led to a symbiotic relationship where the gryphon provides the lift, and the pinion provides the drift.
Weaknesses: Pinions and their gryphon share a life span. If you kill one, the other dies as well. if you injure one, the other feels it. They have two big walking targets. Pinions are also usually incapable of being heavily armored due to their winged arms and need to be riders.

HABITAT:
Biome: The Dusty Mountains west of Lyria.
Nest/Territory traits: What should we look for if we were hunting for this creature? How does it leave its mark on the area it lives in?
Diet: Omnivore, preferring a diet made primarily of mountain creatures like goats (sorry), birds, fish, and grubs. The grubs really gross outsiders out.

Gryphon (pl. Gryphons)

Never before have I seen a creature so capable a hunter, and so fierce a finale that it's become two predators in one.

APPEARANCE
Size: Gryphons are sized to the average fae about the size of a large bear.
Type: Mammal, their back half is lion
Sound/ Cry: Gryphons have the bird cry of whatever predatory bird they take after, plus a chittering sound like an excited house cat. They are also capable of chuffing like tigers.
Color Range: Their colors tend to match the cat and bird type they are made of.
Defining Features: Gryphons are exactly what they say on the tin. They are large animal hybrids between a bird of prey and a big cat, with their size and appearance varying greatly by what mix of those two is used in their creation.

PERSONALITY
Alignment: Domesticated
Aggression Level: Hostile
Defining Behavior: Gryphons are pair bonded with a pinion at birth. They are known to treat their pinion as kin, acting as a guardian and companion both to their fledgemate.

CAPABILITIES
Skills: They have the talons and beak of a bird of prey, the backfeet, balance, and stalking instincts of a cat of prey, and they are as large as a bear. They are a walking mobile beardrop and they live in -packs- on the mountains. No wonder no one leaves Lyria!
Weaknesses: They have powerful flight but little aerial agility without their pinion, making them big dumb violent animals when alone. As long as the first strike is dodged, they take awhile to wind up again without aid. Gryphons additionally have no natural armor, and are built as light as possible to fly.

HABITAT:
Biome: Lyrian Highmount, the bordering mountain range of the country
Nest/Territory traits: They live in outcroppings in the mountainsides and shallow caves to protect from harsher weather elements.
Diet: Carnivore
Prey: Mostly delicious mountaingoats.
Predators: Well aimed bullets.
