Ruby Nights

One toss of her dagger was all it took. A mixture of poison and blood dripped from its steel as it dealt the finishing blows upon its victim. Before standing from atop his back legs boasting both pride and power, the Shadow Master suddenly collapsed in the face of someone he never imagined besting him. The mare who had just slain him was master of nothing. Instead, she was envious and hungry for more, far from satisfied with the uncertainty and pain she’d been left with no choice but to deal with prior.

Ruby Nights shivered for a moment, unsure of what she had just seen. Cornered in the fight that had gone far too close to going sour, she cautiously crept from out of it to examine the wound. With his internal organs exposed directly to the dragon’s blood poison, there remained very little fight the Shadow Master. He wasn’t dead quite yet… as evidenced by the piercing glare of his eye… but there was nothing he could do to stop the poison. It was far too powerful.

“Dammit… You scheming shrew…! What did you put in that thing?” an amalgam of distorted voices hissed at her from behind the Shadow Master’s mask.

“Just a gift from my mother,” Ruby Nights immediately fired back, marching toward the downed guild leader to strike him across the face with all her pent up rage. The mask now removed from his head through force, she looked upon the Shadow Master’s exposed face with satisfaction.

To whip up a violent storm and leave the thieves’ guild in shambles was her one goal in this. She believed it was the only thing she could do actually. In the same way that her mother put her life on the line to protect her children from the Queen, Ruby had vowed to destroy this guild from the inside so that they may never chase her or her sister around for bits again. First, she kidnapped their most expert wordsmith and charmer Starlight Swindler—though she never would have squeezed the location of their hideout from him if it had not been for the help of Impact’s interrogation skills. With the news of Starlight Swindler’s disappearance spreading throughout the guild, the hideout had erupted in chaos. About one third of the guild was dispatched out to the streets of Manehatten. The remaining members were scattered and tense. This situation made it more than easy for Ruby Nights get to their leader.

Their leader was now dead and one of their highest ranking members was missing. Her work finished, Ruby Nights decided that escaping from their base while the chaos was high was her top priority.

But then… the mask spoke to her. Not with words but with temptation and allure that pierced straight through any resolve. It was funny because she never remembered herself coveting something like this in the past. She surely hadn’t risked her life coming here for a silly mask. Regardless, she continued in a trance-like motion toward it until she lifted it up with one hoof and placed it upon her face. It didn’t feel as if she had chosen to take the mask. It was more like the mask had chosen her.

“Sir! I regret to report to you that we’ve yet to uncover the whereabouts of…” a messenger stallion barged into the room, stopping mid-sentence in shock as he laid witness upon the now silent corpse of the former Shadow Master and the masked mare not standing far from it.

I’m your leader, now… You can call me ma’am,” a new Shadow Master chillingly commanded him, only just then realizing it herself as she spoke the distorted words.

“Yes… Ma’am…” the messenger replied to her without confidence. “Is… there anything you want us to do about the situation with Starlight Swindler, Ma’am?”

“Call off the search. As talented with his words as he may be, Starlight Swindler is a rapist and a disgusting pig of a stallion. He is no longer welcome among us. I want you to inform the entire guild of this,” Ruby Nights ordered her messenger with great certainty. It wasn’t as if she was a powerful and commanding leader just yet. She was merely passionate in her hatred towards that particular stallion.

“Yes, Ma’am!” the messenger pony tried to say with more enthusiasm this time. “Also… congratulations on being chosen by the mask. When should I schedule your coronation ceremony, Ma’am?”

“I’ll figure it out when I want to. But not now… I’ve got too much to think about,” Ruby Nights groaned, not like a traditional leader but like the frustrated young adult she truly was behind the mask. She was still confused about how this had all come to happen so fast. Turning her back away from her messenger and the fallen Shadow Master, Ruby Nights sat down to contemplate these thoughts.

“Yes, Ma’am… A-and I look forward to serving you, Ma’am!” her messenger spoke one last time as he closed the door, evading the distracting sight of the large corpse on his way out.
