Meowls A primal relative of Gryphons with nocturnal tendencies, these hybrid felines have spread far and wide since the eternal night began. While bearing all the advantages of predatory owls in their sight and silence, they are also noted for their extraordinary size and feline grace, combining to form an extremely threatening predator across many environments, and possibly one of the most deadly wild creatures on four paws. APPEARANCE Size: Stands about 1.5 ponies tall, but 2 ponies long from head to flank. Type: Mammal Sound/ Cry: A low-pitch warbling roar. Similar to that of a lion or other large cat in pitch but closer to an owl in actual tone. Color Range: Their color range is highly dependent on their surroundings. They usually follow shades from black through to dark red, with whites, greys and browns also involved dependent on their personal feather/fur pattern. Defining Features: Feathered mane and a tail more than half their body length. Winged tips to their ears, and almost excessively large eyes, which are notably reflective in low-light environments. Unlike gryphons, their body is not split cleanly between feline and avian, instead bearing a mostly feline body with some avian features PERSONALITY Alignment: Wild Aggression Level: Hostile Defining Behavior: Meowls are known for a unique method of ambush predation. Robbed of their ability to fly by evolution, Meowls retain a light skeletal structure and powerful feline musculature, giving them the means to leap extremely long distances and guide themselves with feathered structures along their spine and forelegs. Perching on high terrain, Meowls can spot their prey from hundreds of meters away, and make terrifying leaps to attack from distances that other creatures would not even account for. Meowls are territorial, and rarely allow for others of their own species within their chosen hunting ground, with exceptions during mating seasons. CAPABILITIES Skills: Fast and large, with exceptional senses of sight, sound and smell. They can turn their neck more than a full rotation. They are capable of walking on clouds. Weaknesses: A lot of the Meowls’ structural strength is held in their musculature to accommodate for brittle and fragile bones. This means that while their ambush strikes are incredibly deadly a misstep or unexpected impact can cause outright death. In addition, the natural oils in their fur and feathers are particularly flammable and so they have an instinctual fear of flame. HABITAT: Biome Anywhere with high terrain can be taken by a Meowl for their territory, however they have a particular preference for open and dry spaces, as jungle environments or similar locales impair their senses. Nest/Territory traits: Meowls are often easily visible on the highest point of terrain in a given area. Their impact sites are very distinct, leaving long gouges in soft soil and claw marks even on wood and stone. Their feathers are distinct in size and pattern, and they leave prey with severe physical injury, often killing by first impact. Meowl nesting grounds are typically close to their chosen perch, and while they do not create a physical nest the area in which they sleep is often densely littered with lost feathers and fur. Female Meowls with cubs are known to bring prey back to their nesting grounds to feed their children, leaving the areas around their nests spread with animal remains for some time after mating season, creating a very distinct indicator for the residence of a mother Meowl. Diet: Omnivore Prey: Birds, small mammals. When feeding a mate or cubs, will often target larger mammals or other creatures. Predators: Given their lack of strict habitats, Meowls don’t have particular predators. However they often clash with other large carnivores for territory and food supply, and in these clashes the ambush tactics they employ do not match pure ferocity or physical strength.
